Jonathan H. Spadt is the Chief Executive Officer and President of RatnerPrestia. Mr. Spadt is widely recognized throughout the firm for his strong passion in delivering consistent, high quality client service.  Mr. Spadt believes in hiring and developing only the best and he has developed an exceptional team of attorneys and staff who deliver world-class intellectual property legal services.
His vision for the future of the firm includes leveraged growth in U.S., European and Asian markets. With an impressive and extensive international and domestic client base, he continues to lead the firm in developing direct relationships with global companies in both Europe and Asia.  His close cooperation with many German and European clients has allowed him to become licensed by the State of Hessen, Germany, as an Approved Trainer of German Lawyer Trainees.
As to his specific areas of expertise, Mr. Spadt focuses on the development and management of international commercialization plans and the comprehensive strategies that support those plans, including both IP procurement and enforcement.  With a particular focus on transatlantic innovation trade, he has significant experience in dealing with the differences between the U.S. and European legal frameworks.  This experience supports his active role in policy discussions relevant to improving IP laws with the objective of lowering trade barriers between jurisdictions having mutual interests in fostering improved development and commercialization of innovation.  In addition, he has specific experience in business management and risk-avoidance, as well as concomitant licensing and transactions.  More specifically, he has worked closely with clients to develop sophisticated and cost-effective global protection strategies, IP business management plans, opinion strategies, risk-avoidance tactics, and general IP planning and portfolio development.  Features of this work over the past 19 years include providing trial testimony on written opinions which has led to successful outcomes, and the strategic use of tools to minimize litigation exposure, such as post-grant PTO proceedings (namely inter partes reexamination in the past, and now inter partes review (IPR)).  The use of inter partes review has become an increasingly important aspect of any IP strategy, and Mr. Spadt is active not only with IPR proceedings, but also in discussions for legislative changes to the IPR process.
His emphasis on tailored, client-specific approaches has led the Firm to new domestic and international relationships, geographic expansion of work on three continents, and a rise in the number of quality businesses and institutions that trust RatnerPrestia to advise them on their intellectual property matters.
Mr. Spadt's relaxed and occasionally humorous approach to his public speaking has sometimes been confused for what is, in reality, a very intense and decisive executive leadership style.  He routinely writes and lectures throughout the United States and Europe in both the private and public sectors, has appeared on television to discuss patent law reform, and has advised members of Congress on that topic. When asked about the noticeably unusual intensity he exhibits for the practice and improvement of IP law, he simply stated, “I am passionate about IP because it makes the world better.  What we do for our clients matters.”
After graduating with his B.S. in Chemical Engineering, With Distinction, from Penn State University, he worked as an engineer for Merck & Co., Inc. building chemical manufacturing facilities to support Merck's pharmaceutical manufacturing.  This was a natural career path after receiving, in 1991, the Merck-Penn State Academic Fellowship Award.  Mr. Spadt received his Juris Doctor from Villanova University School of Law where he was an Editor for the Sports & Entertainment Law Journal.
